We're Helping Save New Zealand's Only Endemic Land Mammal!

You may have noticed a statement, on every one of our product labels, that highlights the fact that we support local conservation endeavours.

Our ‘pet project’ at present is the Bat Recovery Project at the Pelorus Bridge Reserve which is overseen by Forest & Bird, which is an environmental organisation specialising in conservation of indigenous plant and animal life in and around New Zealand.

Bats are New Zealand's only native land mammals.  Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve is home to one of the last remaining populations of the long-tailed bat, on the top of the South Island.

New Zealand has two species of bat that are its only endemic land mammals

Last year, after hundreds of volunteer hours of trapping these pests, it was very exciting when the capture and release of two critically endangered long-tailed bats was seen as a breakthrough for those who have been working to protect them from extinction. See more video footage of these little critters.

A recent 2017 survey has shown an encouraging increase in the numbers of the bats, which is testament to the efforts of the committed volunteers who are at the heart of the programme.

Five Elements is committed to the ongoing support of conservation projects such as this, as collectively we strive to keep our beautiful country “clean and green”.

With each Five Elements Natural Organic Skincare product purchase you are contributing to the preservation of these highly endangered species!
