New Zealand’s Bird of the Year Is … a Bat

The New Zealand Long-tailed bat (pekapeka) has flown away with this year's New Zealand 'Bird of the Year' award. Alongside the short-tailed bat, it is one of New Zealand's two native land mammals.
Thanks to local predator trapping efforts in Marlborough bat numbers have improved in recent years, but the species still remains critically endangered throughout most of the country. While technically not birds, we hope the flying fur-balls benefit from the extra media attention!
